Entertainer / Artist Information....

Dusty Young

Dusty Young has done it all in show business. Singer, songwriter, musician and actor.
He started off as a big band musician in Ireland and is now one of the top Irish Comedy speakers in the world.
His humor is gentle and clean and typically Irish. He also has a nice singing voice and plays Trombone and Penny Whistle, but not at the same time.
Dusty was born in Dublin because he wanted to be near his mother. He is the youngest of 8 children, the neighbors didn't know if his father was a good catholic or a very sloppy protestant.
He wasn't born in a slum but as soon as his parents could afford it they moved into one.

Kevin Collins

Kevin started singing at the tender age of six, and started publicly performing at age 13.
Spending the majority of his childhood days at his grandmothers house, Kevin learned to have great respect for his grandmother and seniors. One of Kevin's releases entitled, "My Old Homestead" was lovingly dedicated to his grandmother! On a trip to Boston, with his grandmother, eight year old Kevin, performed on stage with Leroy Van Dyke and received a standing ovation.
Kevin is very proud of the fact that his grandfather, Charles Collins, a resident of Bond's Path, Placentia was a mail-carrier for 29 years. Charles Collins delivered mail from Placentia to Patrick's Cove on the Cape Shore by horse and buggy for a distance of 15 miles year ‘round for 29 years. He later worked in the lumber woods for the remainder of his life until his death at age 55. He left behind a wife and 12 children.

Maura O'Connell

Born and raised in County Clare, Ireland, she was the third of four singing sisters, but it wasn't ancient Celt folk tunes in which that household was drenched--but their singing mother's collection of light opera, opera, and parlor song records.

"I'm sure that those have something to do with how I approach singing," O'Connell says now. "I was aware of singing as an art form in itself." With that awareness, and her focus on singing, she has always been most interested in tunes "that haven't been performed by other people." That was a key reason her first public role as lead singer with the tradition-oriented DeDannan never felt entirely comfortable, and the reason why, in the midst of that folk success, she was so attracted to the experimental roots music of America's New Grass Revival when the bands' paths crossed.

"They were instrumentalists who were not bound by the history of their instruments, from a generation who grew up listening to bluegrass, and the Beatles, and jazz. They brought all of that along, and pushed the envelope really far. There was an exciting feeling of creativity there--and a complete disregard for what anyone thought!"

Brendan Shine

Starting his career in his native Athlone, Brendan joined “Kieran Kelly’s Ceili Band” along with school pal Johnny Dawson, who, to this day is still with Brendan playing drums in the “Brendan Shine Super Band”. He made his name first as an excellent accordionist alongside such stars as Dermot O'Brien, Fintan Stanley and Ritchie Fitzgerald. However, he soon took center stage, picked up the microphone and had a huge string of hits in Ireland. He is still on the road today, going as strong as ever!

Natural Gas

Natural Gas is a four-piece group.  They have a gigantic repertoire from slow and plaintive love songs to lively sea shanties to rousing ballads, poetry and recitations and lively dance music played on a wide range of instruments including fiddle, uilleann pipes, guitar, tin whistle, accordion, harmonica, bass and bodhran. Although their roots are firmly based in traditional music, the band has no problem in traversing all musical styles.  They’re quite at home performing covers like Neil Young’s ‘Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World’ or L.L. Cool J’s rap anthem ‘I need Love’ easily blending jigs and reels with these songs to put their own stamp on them.  Many tales, not all of them repeatable, abound as to where the band derived their name.  One sanitized version explains a “gas man” as somebody humourous or good fun to be with.  Natural speaks for itself, no tricks or gimmickry here, just honest music from the heart.

Christy Moore

Christy Moore,
The starting point of my life as a musician.

As I recall today my first gig was in the original Embankment in Tallaght in 1965. I was booked by the late Peggy Jordan to play in this great venue, then being developed by Mick McCarthy (The real Mick McCarthy). I was paid ten shillings. I bought a shirt for 7/6 and went to town on the balance.
At this time the scene that was emerging in Dublin mesmerized me but I found it impossible to get a foot in the door. I had a small repertoire of good songs and I always went down well when I got a chance to sing. But looking back now I was probably not cool enough for the bookers.
I moved to England in ’66 and via work on buildings, factories, oilrigs I ended up on the folk club circuit in Manchester in 1967. My first gig as a professional folk singer was at The Wellgreen Folk Club, Manchester on May 4th. I was paid £6 and I sang:

Mary Duff

Mary Duff's phenomenal talent as a singer, together with the great stage presence and charisma she possesses, is testimony of her quietly powerful
and captivating persona. There is a genuine warmth about this lady that touches all who come into contact with her, and she enjoys a dedicated, very
supportive fan following. Mary is seen in the music business as an accomplished, polished, and highly respected professional performer.
Mary first got the chance to showcase her talent at just 12 years of
age when, quite by chance, her father heard her singing on a home
tape recorder, and recognized she had quite a talent.  Having his own
band at that time, he invited Mary to sing with them at the weekends.
Once Mary finished school she took up office work in her home county,
Meath, in Ireland.  It was whilst still working in an office, that she
auditioned and successfully got the job as vocalist with a band called
Jukebox. She then gave up office work and remained with Jukebox for
about 3 years.

Francis Black

FRANCES BLACK's professional singing debut was in 1986, when she began performing with her three brothers and sister (Shay, Michael, Martin, Mary, Frances) as The Black Family, performing a mix of traditional and contemporary/traditional Irish music. With The Black Family, she did two major tours of Ireland in the late 1980s, and appears on both recorded albums [see discography].

The three brothers, Shay, Michael and Martin, released an album, What A Time, on the Blix Street label in 1995. Frances appears on vocals and backing vocals on most of the tracks. The recording also includes Patty Black, their mother, doing a particularly fun rendition of Now I Have to Call Him Father

In 1988, after recording the second Black Family album, Time For Touching Home, Frances joined the group Arcady as vocalist (with former De Dannan member Johnny McDonagh, and Brendan Larrissey, Patsy Broderick, Sean Keane, Cathal Hayden, Sharon Shannon, and Paul Doyle). While Frances was with Arcady, the group toured internationally - including Europe, Iraq and the U.S. - and recorded their debut album, After The Ball, containing a mixture of traditional tunes and vocals/songs. The single for the album's title track, the song After the Ball - on which Frances recorded vocals - went to #7. The album was #6 on the Irish charts and also successful in the U.S. folk market.

Foster & Allen
Foster & Allen began back in the seventies when Mick and Tony were playing in Country Music bands around Ireland. In 1975 they formed a small group and went over to the UK to work the Irish music venues on a short tour.
Mick & Tony had at this stage the idea of working together as a duo, playing ‘hardcore rock’ music with a touch of traditional Irish instrumentals. When their UK tour finished they decided to let the band return to Ireland whilst they stayed behind to try and break into the public eye. They played several venues in the London area and the reaction was very favourable; so much so, they decided to remain as a duo and Foster and Allen was unleashed upon the world.
It was difficult at the beginning and after a time working around the circuit in the UK and Ireland, they released their first single record The Rambles of Spring. This made a good impact on the Irish market and Foster and Allen were soon in demand for cabaret venues all over Ireland and to a much lessor extent the UK At the end of 1978 Foster and Allen released the single A Bunch Of Thyme in Ireland, which entered the Irish charts and became their first top-selling No. 1 single.

Declan Nerney

Declan was born in the heart of Ireland in Drumlish Co Longford, at a unique period of time in the music scene worldwide. A revolution in rock and pop brought us The Beatles, Elvis, and the Rolling Stones, while here in Ireland the magnificent showband boom was about to explode.

A young man growing up at that time, Declan was being heavily influenced by these greats and indeed was getting the rare opportunity to see most of the top showbands appear in his native town of Drumlish. He would cajole his mother into seeing Joe Dolan, Big Tom, Philomena Begley, The Capital Showband, and many more perform when the appeared at the marquee at the end of May and early June. From his vantage point close to the stage, he would absorb every move made by the guitarist in the bands, watching his fingers slide along the strings, hoping that one day he might be up there performing just like Dan O'Hara or Seamus McMahon...
