Maura O'Connell

Born and raised in County Clare, Ireland, she was the third of four singing sisters, but it wasn't ancient Celt folk tunes in which that household was drenched--but their singing mother's collection of light opera, opera, and parlor song records.

"I'm sure that those have something to do with how I approach singing," O'Connell says now. "I was aware of singing as an art form in itself." With that awareness, and her focus on singing, she has always been most interested in tunes "that haven't been performed by other people." That was a key reason her first public role as lead singer with the tradition-oriented DeDannan never felt entirely comfortable, and the reason why, in the midst of that folk success, she was so attracted to the experimental roots music of America's New Grass Revival when the bands' paths crossed.

"They were instrumentalists who were not bound by the history of their instruments, from a generation who grew up listening to bluegrass, and the Beatles, and jazz. They brought all of that along, and pushed the envelope really far. There was an exciting feeling of creativity there--and a complete disregard for what anyone thought!"

Dan Hallissey

Dan's music background started at home at the age of eight when he attended piano classes, at ten, he turned to learning the accordion under the guidance of Mort Kelleher and stayed until he won the under 18 All-Ireland Piano Accordion section, seven years later. His father, Michael was a great influence in getting all of the Hallissey family involved in playing music, and with eight of us there, the house was never quiet. Many of Dan's sisters still play and sing both professionally and semi.

The first band Dan played in was a three piece called 'The Supertones', bass, drums and guitar, which included Gerard O'Rourke and Tim Harrington. They were very popular in and around the bars of County Cork and they lasted for about three years. Gerard upped and got married and Tim and Dan then went under the name 'New Dimension', bass, guitar, keyboards and drum machine.

The Waterboys

The Waterboys is a band formed in 1983 by Mike Scott. The band's membership, past and present, has been composed mainly of musicians from Scotland and Ireland. London, Dublin, Spiddal, New York and Findhorn have all served as homes for the group. The band has played in a number of different styles, but their music is a mix of Celtic folk music with rock and roll, or folk rock. After ten years of recording and touring, they dissolved in 1993 and Scott pursued a solo career. They reformed in 2000, and continue to release albums and tour worldwide. Scott emphasizes a continuity between The Waterboys and his solo work, saying that "To me there's no difference between Mike Scott and the Waterboys; they both mean the same thing. They mean myself and whoever are my current travelling musical companions."[1]
